The administration of Lakshadweep has been passed on to several Muslim rulers during the past few centuries. The British established their supremacy in India in the 19th century as a result of which they introduced their own system of administration in the islands. Their policy was to exploit the profits from the islands through the Beebi without taking responsibility of its administration. But when India got her independence in 1947, the islands came under the control of Indian Government and subsequently it was made a union territory in 1956.

The Administrator is appointed by the President of India under clause (1) of Article 239 of the Constitution of India with effect from 22nd December, 2006. Honourable Administrator is the Head of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. He/She is also the Chairman of Lakshadweep Development Corporation (a U. T. Administration public sector undertaking) and SPORTS (Society for Promotion of Recreational Tourism and Sports). He also functions ex-officio as the Inspector General of Lakshadweep Police.
